Numphaion

the exhibition

Young Art Hunters, a Milan-based company that has always been committed to the promotion and
dissemination of young and emerging art, reconfirms its collaboration with
the Hotel Piccolo Lido again this year and for the occasion presents: Numphaion.

'To women the land, to men the sea', it has always been said.
This notion has perpetuated the idea that women are mainly involved in
in agriculture and rarely in maritime activities. Ships and boats, in fact, are
long been considered a purely male domain. For centuries it was believed
even that having women on board was bad luck, since it was thought that
distract the sailors from their intended course, drawing parallels with the
mythical Mermaids.

Yet, Greek mythology itself teaches us how much the female figure and
the water element are complementary, telling us about different and multiple
female water deities, starting with Talassa, the primordial goddess of the
sea, followed by a line of Nereids and Oceanines, her daughters and granddaughters. Also the
history is studded with female characters who challenged gender roles and
have left a significant mark, such as the Spanish flagship Isabel
Barreto and the pirates Grace O'Malley, Anne Bonny, Mary Read and Ching Shih.

Numphaion takes a courageous course and sails towards gender equality.
Through the centuries-old tale and myth of the Ligurian lands, undertaken from the point
view of eight emerging artists in the exhibition, the intention is to make the
public on the role of the modern woman, recognised as such, ready to
finally achieve social emancipation and rejoin those
fantastic and real that brought female power to the mouth of the
men.
